Autotransplantation of teeth can be considered as an interesting treatment option for missing teeth in young not fully grown patients (age category 10 to 18 years). Clinical results have been extensively researched, but, to the best of my knowledge, data on the patient's experiences and expectations regarding the autotransplantation cannot be found in the existing literature. In this study, we investigated the expectations together with influence of the pre-existing dental anxiety of patients undergoing an autotransplantation and how they experienced the procedure and the early postoperative course. The outcome of this study can be used to inform patients and parents/carers as optimally as possible in the future and to prepare them for the procedure and the postoperative course. This is both for the patient undergoing the procedure under general anesthesia as well as under local anesthesia. In this study 25 patients were included that underwent an autotransplant at the University Medical Center in Groningen and the Tjongerschans hospital in Heerenveen. Whereof 10 patients were treated under anesthesia and 15 under local anesthesia. The study population had a mean age of 11.9 years. Questions were presented to the patients at three different moments, T0 (preoperative), T1 (1 week postoperative) and T2 (2-3 weeks postoperative). The questions referred to the limitations and expectations of daily functioning and the pain (per- and postoperative). In addition, questions were asked about dental anxiety and the life expectancy of the autograft. These questions were taken in writing and saved in REDCap. Patients were unable to perform normal daily activities for the first 3 or 4 postoperative days, wherein the group that had the procedure under general anesthesia was limited for longer days than the group that had the procedure under local anesthesia. The actual perceived impairment of daily functioning and the expectation did not differ significantly from between the general anesthesia and local anesthesia group. For the total study group, a significant difference between the expected and actually experienced pain was found, where more pain was expected than actually experienced. No difference was found between the general anesthesia and local anesthesia group in the actual experienced pain and in the dose of pain medication. These variables decreased by the day in both groups during the first postoperative week. No correlation was found between the degree of dental anxiety and the expected postoperative pain. 96% of the research group does not have a realistic picture of the lifespan of the autograft. This study shows that the provision of information to patients undergoing an autotransplantation can be improved. This seems an important task for the treating physician.
