Abstract

The finding that visual exploratory behavior is important for the successfulness of football actions, raises the question whether this behavior can be trained. The goal of this study was to examine the construct validity of a virtual-reality football cognitive training game (Be Your Best™) which aims to assess and train this behavior. Thirteen elite youth football players participated in a 9x9 small-sided training game and completed a virtual-reality gaming session. Measures of visual exploratory behavior (VEB) obtained by behavioral analysis were compared to measures of visual exploratory behavior obtained by playing the virtual reality football cognitive training game. Results showed a moderate but only marginally significant relationship between scan frequency on the pitch with virtual scan frequency. This finding can be seen as a first hint that player’s VEB can be measured using virtual 3D environments. This result, among others, shows a promising prospective into assessing and training visual exploratory behavior with virtual 3D-environments. Recommendations for developing this VR-game further are given.
