Abstract

The present study aims to investigate how the psychological variables collective efficacy (CE) and task cohesion (TC) correlate with the perceived psychological momentum (PM) of three first-year rowing crews in a field-setting, i.e. during their competitive rowing season. Reaching a high (i.e. top-3) ranking in the first-year classification is commonly an important long-term goal for these crews. Questionnaires were distributed before and after each classification race, measuring their PM, CE, and TC, and asking for their most important team-goal for the season. Ranking in the classification was used as an objective performance measure. A significant correlation was found between PM-CE, PM-TC, and CE-TC for all three crews. However, there was only a significant correlation between these variables and ranking for one crew. Another crew only showed a significant correlation between ranking and PM, and the last crew showed no significant correlation between ranking and any other variable. In conclusion, it was found that CE and TC are important psychological variables that correlate with perceived PM in a field setting. However, the possible relation between ranking as performance outcome and PM, CE, and TC is not as straightforward, and may be influenced by the goal-setting of the crew. Key words: psychological momentum, collective efficacy, task cohesion, rowing, performance
