Abstract

Objective Beam walking is a new tool to measure dynamic balance. It is unique in adding an actual loss of balance. This study examined the extent to which beam walking could detect balance differences in people with a neurological disorder. Study design This is an observational study, that was made possible by the BEAM consortium. Beam walking results (distance, gait speed and step length) and functional test results were compared between healthy participants and neurological participants, and between neurological participants with different disorders. Validity of beam walking is also examined. Results Both beam walking and functional tests detect differences between healthy participants and neurological participants, but only beam walking detects differences between neurological participants with different disorders. Correlations show commonalities with functional tests, attributing to validity. However, there is lots of unique variance that can be explained by the added loss of balance. Conclusions These results are promising, but more research is needed to examine the discriminative value of beam walking.
