Haan, J. de (Jakob) (2020) Body Language in Soccer: An exploratory study into nonverbal behavior using arm movements during matches. thesis, Sport Sciences.
Full text available on request.Abstract
In soccer almost no research has been done on body language, especially not in open play during games. Therefore, the goal of this exploratory study was to develop a coding scheme for body language in open play soccer games and to try to establish some first patterns in this behaviour. Five official games were analysed and with all body language, based on arm movements, the purpose was noted. Results showed the reproducibility and consistency of the coding. It showed also that players use arm movements most often for tactical purposes, followed by asking for the ball, positive, negative and claiming arm movements, respectively. Midfielders and defenders seemed to show the largest number of arm movements. When looking at the distribution over time, more arm movements were made during the second half, but no further conclusions can be made yet. Future research is needed to gain more insight into the different types of players and the possible patterns shown in this study.
