Gerritsen, W.T.C. (Wouter) (2020) Sprint Capacity of Others Can Be Perceived by Seeing Them Walk, But Only When Observers Are Unfatigued. thesis, Human Movement Sciences.

Earlier studies showed that observers have the ability to accurately perceive action capabilities of others, although this depends on the condition in which they do so. The present study investigated if observers are able to estimate sprint capacity of others based on walking. Local level football players (n = 12) saw videos of unfatigued and fatigued actors walking, after which they made estimations on the time it took actors to sprint from one point to another. In one condition the observers were unfatigued, in the other condition they were fatigued. Fatigue was induced by participating in a regular 90-minute football practice. Unfatigued observers were able to accurately estimate sprint capacity of both fatigued and unfatigued actors. When the observers were fatigued they overestimated sprint duration, and thus underestimated sprint capacity. Effects of observer condition and ambiguous results of actor condition and differences between actors are discussed. Keywords: perception, affordances, sprinting, fatigue
