Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore how young people with physical disabilities become and stay involved in sport and physical recreation with a view to informing strategies to support greater participation. Ten young people (15-23 years old) with physical disabilities who already participated in sport took part in semi-structured interviews about how they started to participate and factors that supported their ongoing participation. Thematic analysis identified five themes: ‘door openers: introducers and supporters’, ‘fair play’, ‘a determined mindset’, ‘big investments in sport’ and ‘great returns on investments’. This study suggests that it would be beneficial to educate parents, school staff, health professionals and coaches about the value of sport and about sport options for young people with physical disabilities, and that creating an inclusive sport environment and increasing awareness could contribute to supporting young people to develop a determined mindset about their (dis)ability and their involvement in sport.
