Abstract

Despite numerous health benefits, guidelines for physical activity (PA) are often not met by preschoolers. To provide more insight into barriers and facilitators for PA, we aimed to examine how different potential determinants in the social environment of the home and out-of-home childcare setting are associated with total PA, but also the time spent in low, moderate and vigorous intensity (LPA, MPA, VPA) in 3-to-5-year-old children. Objective PA data was obtained using a DirectLife tri-axial accelerometer, TracmorD (wear time > 400 min/day, ≥ 3days). Parents of the 169 participating children (age = 3.9 ± 0.1 years, 55% boys) filled in a questionnaire to obtain data related to family structure, parental encouragement, type of house, presence of a garden, electronic devices and out-of-home childcare. The use of linear regression models indicated that every extra family member was associated with 8.5 more minutes of engagement in LPA (β(95%CI) = 8.5 min(0.5;17)). The presence of older siblings was associated with more time spent in LPA (β(95%CI) = 19 min(5.8;33)) at the expense of the time spent in sedentary behavior (β(95%CI) = -16.1 min(-31;-1.5)). The presence of more electronic devices in the home environment was associated with less time spent in sedentary behavior (β(95%CI) = -16 min(-30;-1.9)). Attending daycare was associated with more time spent in MPA (β(95%CI) = 6.3 min(0.3;12)). The gender of siblings, parental encouragement, type of house and having a babysitter were not associated with PA. In conclusion, social interaction appears to be associated with more time spent in specific intensities of PA, although no increase was seen in TPA.
