Abstract

Objectives: The main objective of this study was to investigate whether a recently new introduced external load approach, metabolic power (MP), could be useful as a monitoring tool in handball. Secondary objectives of this study were to investigate the positional and gender-specific differences on MP variables. Methods: Positional and heart rate (HR) data of 11 male and 17 female elite youth handball players during 78 training sessions of season 2020-2021 were collected using HR monitors and a Local Positioning Measurement (LPM) system. From the collected HR data, TRIMPmod scores were calculated. After each training session biomechanical and cardiovascular RPE were registered and multiplied by its duration into session RPEs. From positional data, various distance based variables were calculated including total distance covered (TD), high intensity distance (HID) and number of accelerations and decelerations. Furthermore, various MP variables were calculated including Mean MP, Peak MP, total energy expenditure (EE), time, distance, and EE in 5 MP zones. Results: Large effect sizes were found between EE and training intensity types and high Pearson correlations were found between EE and all three internal load measures for both male and female. Significant differences were found on multiple MP variables between male playing positions between female positions and between gender. Conclusion: MP variables have potential as new external load variables in elite handball. MP variables provide a more comprehensive measure of volume and intensity than other external load measures, resulting in a step in the right direction regarding load monitoring. Differences between playing positions and gender on multiple MP variables support the sensitivity of MP in handball.
