An increase in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) surgeries are expected, especially within the working population. Only few data are available on the level of actual physical activity (PA) of TKA patients and no objective data is known to describe the level of PA at work. The aim of the present study was therefore to examine the level of PA in TKA patients who returned to work during a regular working week. A sample of 17 TKA patients were measured 6 months post-surgery. They wore an accelerometer for seven consecutive days during a regular working week and filled in a survey. The PA of the participants was compared to the Nederlandse Norm Gezond Bewegen (NNGB) and to which extend it was associated with sociodemographic- and work characteristics, as well with the self-reported level of work functioning. A first impression of PA during working hours in this small sample of TKA patients is made and suggests a close to normal behavioral pattern. Most of their time is spent in sedentary behavior, yet 9 out of 17 participants met the NNGB. During the workweek, a stable course of PA was found. Job type and contractual working hours are associated with PA. Participants with physically or mixed demanding jobs were more active than participants with a mentally demanding job. Participants with more contractual working hours were more active than those with less contractual working hours. The WRFQ subscore of physical demands and PA have only a weak correlation. Those results imply that work characteristics could influence PA of TKA patients positively. Key words: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA), actual physical activity, accelerometry, Work Role Functioning Questionnaire (WRFQ), work functioning
