Aim This study examined if children with higher levels of cardiovascular fitness perform better on inhibition, and exhibit less lapses of attention, than children with lower levels of cardiovascular fitness. Method In total, 350 children with a mean age of 9.1 years (± 0.7) participated in the study. Cardiovascular fitness was measured with the 20m Shuttle Run Test (SRT). On the basis of quartile scores on SRT, participants were divided into four cardiovascular fitness groups. Inhibition was measured with the Stop Signal Task (SST). Lapses of attention were determined after analysis of the ex-Gaussian distribution of GO trials. The effect of cardiovascular fitness was analyzed with an analysis of variances (ANOVA). Results Children from the low- and below average cardiovascular fitness groups performed lower on the SST than children from above average fit groups (p<.05). For lapses of attention (tau), the lowest cardiovascular fitness group exhibited significantly more lapses than the highest cardiovascular fitness group (p<.05), the below average cardiovascular fitness group exhibited significantly more lapses than the above average- and high cardiovascular fitness groups (p<.05). Conclusion This study showed that children with low and below average levels of cardiovascular fitness perform lower on inhibition and exhibit more lapses of attention than children with high and above average levels of cardiovascular fitness. More research is needed in order to examine the exact effect of cardiovascular fitness. Keywords Cardiovascular fitness – inhibition – lapses of attention – cardiovascular fitness hypothesis – children
