Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to define the performance behaviour of beach volleyball players in different stages of the development as well as in different levels of performance. This was done by performing semi-structured interviews with 30 beach volleyball players. The beach volleyball players were divided in four groups, elite athletes in mastery stage, competitive athletes in mastery stage, elite athletes in developmental stage and competitive athletes in developmental stage. The interview lasted approximately one hour. After transcribing all interviews verbatim, the researchers marked all the quotes that represented performance behaviour. This resulted in a code framework of 57 behaviours divided over 16 themes. The behaviours mentioned during the interviews were compared and for each of the groups a profile of performance behaviour was made. A profile of performance behaviour consists of all of the themes that reached consensus between the athletes within a group (100% score). The performance behaviour profiles of the different groups had three themes in common: adaptability, communication & coaching, and goal orientation. When looking deeper into the results differences within these themes were also found. This research showed that all beach volleyball players have a slightly different profile. How beach volleyball players deal with challenges is a combination of personality and experience, and is different for every beach volleyball player. There should not be one way to learn, every athlete has their own path. However helpful behaviours for all beach volleyball players according to this study are adaptability, communication & coaching and goal orientation.
