Abstract

Background: Creativity is often mentioned as an important aspect of performance in soccer and is often seen as an important predictor for talent development and selection systems. In order to compare players or teams, it is necessary that the concept of creativity is measureable. Until now creativity has been assessed by experts’ judgments. Purpose: The aim of this exploratory study was to start with the objectification of creativity in youth soccer, in order to be able to identify talent in a more objective way. The second aim was to examine the relation between creativity and result orientation. Methods: The creative behavior of 34 youth soccer players of four different teams (elite U9; elite U11; amateur U9; and amateur U11) was analyzed in an objective and a subjective way. Furthermore, the result orientation was analyzed by an efficiency score. Results: The results show that the objective measure indicates other players as creative compared to the subjective measure. Objective measurements offer a broader range of possibilities to look at creativity than just by expert knowledge. Analysis on the differences between playing level revealed that elite players were assessed as more creative compared to amateur players. Significant higher scores for elite players were found for both measures. Conclusion: This study is a good first step in the objectification of creativity in youth soccer. Further research is because there is still territory to win. Furthermore, it needs more research to define how the context, game situations, and personal characteristics play a part in the higher creativity score of elite players. It is, needless to say that, supported by the results of this study, it is important to train ‘the creative muscles’ in all players, to ensure results and more attractive soccer. Keywords: tactical creativity – divergent thinking – objective measurement – subjective measurement – goal orientation – talent.
