Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine habitual physical activity in people with early-onset dementia and examine if habitual physical activity is associated with quality of life, health-related quality of life, neuropsychiatric symptoms and apathy. Methods: Cross-sectional design. Thirty-five people with early-onset dementia (aged 65 ± 5 years) participated in the study. Habitual physical activity was assessed using the Short Questionnaire to Asses Health enhancing physical activity (SQUASH). Multiple regression analyses were performed to examine the association between habitual physical activity and quality of life, health-related quality of life, neuropsychiatric symptoms and apathy. Results: Almost two third of the participants indicated they complied with the Dutch guidelines for physical activity. People with early-onset dementia were mostly active in performing household activities, leisure-time activities and sports activities. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that habitual physical activity is associated with quality of life and apathy in people with early-onset dementia. No association was found between habitual physical activity and health-related quality of life and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Conclusion: This was the first study to assess habitual physical activity in people with early-onset dementia. Extra physical activity can be acquired by means of leisure-time activities out of own initiative or at home. Furthermore, no association was found between habitual physical activity and health-related quality of life and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Even though, this study identified physical activity as a potential target for early intervention to improve quality of life and apathy levels in people with early-onset dementia. Future studies should focus on the cause-consequence relationship between habitual physical activity and quality of life and apathy.
