Synchronization of movements is important for a perfect performance in crew rowing. Synchronization between rowers can occur by perceptual coupling such as visual, auditory or haptic coupling, or by mechanical coupling. In crew rowing the boat serves as a mechanical link between the rowers. If one rower starts moving, the other rower will be moved by the boat. This study examined the effect of the mechanical link on crew rowing performance at different conditions and stroke rates. Sixteen dyads participate in a rowing experiment with two rowing ergometers on slides. In the unlinked conditions the ergometers were placed on 4 slides, 2 slides for each ergometer. In the linked conditions the ergometers were together on 3 slides, so there was a mechanical link and they could move like one boat. The participants rowed in an inphase and antiphase pattern at a stroke rate of 20 and 30 strokes per minute in both conditions. Movements of the dyads were measured with active markers and a three dimensional motion analysis system (Optotrak), in order to compute the standard deviation and the absolute error of the relative phase between the rowers as a measure of variability and accuracy. The variability and accuracy of the crew rowing coordination improved significantly in the mechanical linked conditions compared to the unlinked conditions. Also, as expected, crew coordination breakdowns occurred only in antiphase rowing, especially in the unlinked conditions. Together, these results support that the mechanical link is vital for mutual synchronization and thus for an optimal crew rowing performance.
