Abstract

The present study examined whether children prefer a standardized or a nonstandardized jumping stone configuration. Moreover, we examined whether the group size influences the preference of configuration, and whether the playing behavior was reflected by the opinion of the children on a 5-point Likert smiley scale. During this study, 54 children, ranging from six to twelve years of age, were free to play in a standardized and/or a nonstandardized configuration for five minutes. After playing, the opinion in terms of ‘beauty’ and ‘fun’ on both configurations was assessed. Moreover, the number of gap crossings and the total- and maximal unbroken time in each configuration were determined. Our main finding was that children, independent of playing alone or in a group, played a longer time in the nonstandardized configuration, and rated this configuration higher in terms of ‘fun’ and ‘beauty’. Thus, children seem to prefer the nonstandardized configuration. Further results and their implications are discussed. Keywords: Children, playgrounds, standardization, preference, measurements, group size.
