This study examined the tactical behavior of teams and lines of players prior to goals and goal attempts and compared them with periods without goals and goal attempts. Positional data of thirty-eight elite-standard male youth soccer players were collected during two full-sized competitive matches. Both matches were divided into ball possession periods that led to a shot or goal or ball possession periods that did not lead to a shot or goal. Positional data were used to calculate longitudinal and lateral inter-team distances, surface areas and longitudinal and lateral stretch indices for teams and for the attacking (3 players) and defending (4 players) lines for the last 12 seconds of these periods. Furthermore, coefficients of variation were calculated to check for differences in variability between periods. Subsequently, periods were divided into four 3s-periods in order to check for changes over time. Results showed no large differences for team variables. However, significantly larger longitudinal and lateral inter-line distances and longitudinal stretch index of the defending line were found. Furthermore, significantly smaller line width and lateral stretch index both of the attacking line were found. Over time variables did not change in periods that did not lead to a shot or goal but did change when a shot or goal was performed. The variability was higher in periods that lead to a shot or goal in 7 out of 8 variables. To conclude, when a shot or goal was performed, attacking and defending lines tend to stand further away from each other along and across the pitch, the spread across the pitch and width of the attacking line is smaller and the variability in both lines is higher.
