Abstract

Tactical, psychological and cognitive characteristics are important to become an elite soccer player. Elite players have found to perform better on positioning & deciding, effort, reflection, intrinsic motivation, task/ego orientation and executive functions compared to non-elite players. The current study examined the differences between the age categories for all these characteristics. Furthermore, an integrated view was used to look at the relationships between these characteristics in talented youth soccer players. A total of 67 youth players in the ages of 11-19 years were measured at the end of the competitive season 2014-2015. The questionnaire contained the subscale “positioning and deciding” from the Tactical Skill Inventory for Sports (TACSIS), the subscales “reflection” and “effort” from the Self-Regulation of Learning-Self-Report Scale (SRL-SRS), the subscale intrinsic motivation from the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) and the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ). Furthermore, executive functions were measured using the design fluency test (DFT) and the trail making test (TMT). The results showed differences between the age categories for effort, intrinsic motivation, task orientation, DFT filter and the TMT A. Furthermore, structural equation modelling in LISREL showed that task orientation is positively related to reflection and intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is in its turn positively related to effort and effort is positively related to positioning & deciding. In addition, effort is also negatively related to creativity. The results indicate the importance of monitoring performance characteristics in talent development programs. Furthermore, the results support the integrated view on task orientation, reflection, intrinsic motivation, effort, creativity and positioning & deciding in talented soccer players.
