Abstract

During periods of fixture congestion players have only limited time to recover, which can in turn lead to fatigue and decreased performance. The present study aimed to assess knowledge about changes in physical and technical performance both between and within matches during elite female field hockey tournaments. The design of this study was observational. Twenty-one elite female field hockey players (mean (± SD), age, height and mass: 25.5 ± 3.3 y, 1.71 ± 0.06 m and 63.9 ± 4.5 kg, respectively) participated in this study. During two international tournaments, nine matches were evaluated using Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system analysis, heart rate monitors and video analysis. All variables (total distance covered, total distance covered during low speed activities (< 7 km.h-1), total distance covered during high speed activities (≥7 km.h-1), number of sprints (≥20 km.h-1), mean heart rate, efficiency index (a ratio between external and internal load), involvements with the ball and percentage of successful passes) were analysed with a repeated measures ANOVA. Between matches, results showed changes in five out of six physical performance variables and in one out of two technical performance variables. Within matches, changes were shown in three physical performance variables and one technical performance variable. However, the results of this study did not show systematic changes for physical as well as for technical performance towards the end of tournaments and matches. This suggests that the match schedules of tournaments provide sufficient rest between the matches and that the substitution method is applied adequately for this team.
