Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychosocial status in relation to rowing performance in freshman rowers. 90 male and 47 female freshman rowers (age 20.5 ± 1.6 years) performed seven Submaximal Rowing Tests (SmRTs) in conjunction with RESTQ-Sport and POMS questionnaires, throughout one competitive rowing season. 19 subscales and 7 main scales (Σ General Stress, Σ General Recovery, Σ Sport-Specific Stress, and Σ Sport-Specific Recovery, Total Stress and Σ Total Recovery, and Σ Recovery-Stress balance) were calculated for the RESTQ-Sport, as well as 5 subscales and 2 main scales (Total Mood Disturbance and Energy Index) for the POMS. Scale scores were related to power output in the second stage (P80) and third stage (P90) of the SmRT, as well as heart rate recovery in the first minute (HRR60s) by means of multilevel modelling. Recovery-stress balance and mood state in female rowers were shown to be correlated to physical performance, especially for P90 and HRR60s, but relationships were unclear in male rowers, indicating that gender differences may influence results. Psychosocial status of athletes is related to physical performance, and it is therefore important to monitor these together. Measuring perceived stress and recovery by means of the RESTQ-Sport shows better results than measuring mood by means of the POMS questionnaire.
