Abstract

It is known that physical capacities of football players are subject to seasonal changes and differences exist between player groups. However, the independent contribution of seasonal change and player characteristics to physical capacities is currently unknown. Therefore the aim of this study is to investigate the independent contribution of seasonal change (i.e. time) and player characteristics (i.e. gender, level and position) to physical capacity using multilevel modelling. Over the course of a season (34 weeks) 68 football players (mean age = 19.27 ± 1.85 years, height = 173.5 ± 7.3 cm and weight = 71.84 ± 15.67 kg) with different genders, playing levels, playing positions and body mass were tested 6 times for physical capacity. Anaerobic capacity was measured with a 30-m sprint test, power with the Counter Movement Jump (CMJ), reactive agility with a Reactive Agility Test (RAT) and aerobic capacity with the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery test level 1 (YYIR1). Results revealed seasonal changes in all capacities. Both anaerobic capacities and power decreased, whilst reactive agility and aerobic capacity increased as the season progressed. Additionally, gender contributed to all physical capacities, body mass to 30-m sprint and YYIR1, and playing level to YYIR1, with women, heavier and low-level players all possessing lower physical capacities. It is recommended that coaches incorporate sufficient sprint and power training to maintain these capacities over the season. Moreover coaches do need to adapt their training programs to the specific player group. Key words: Soccer, performance analysis, season, gender, multilevel modelling.
