Abstract

Background: In people with a physical disability or chronic condition the rate of participation in physical activity is lower compared to healthy people, while the beneficial consequences of physical activity are at least the same for both groups. Therefore, it is important to investigate the demands on a physical activity stimulating intervention for this target group. The aim of the current study is to investigate the demands of both experts and the target group on a physical activity stimulation intervention. Methods: Four focus group meetings with experts (total n=28) and 21 semi structured interviews with the target group (mean age 50.7 years (14.7)) were conducted, recorded and transcribed verbatim. Central themes for a physical activity intervention were constructed, using an integrated model of the Activity for People with a Disability (PAD) model and Intervention Mapping (IM) model as background scheme. Besides, the Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale (ESES) questionnaire was used to determine the level of self-efficacy, while a Dutch adapted version of the SQUASH questionnaire was used to determine the level of daily activity and sedentary behavior of the target group. Results: Both experts and the target group encountered personal and environmental factors associated with (an intervention to stimulate) participation in physical activity, which were placed in the integrated PAD- and Intervention Mapping model. Physical activity factors described at environmental level were facilitators and barriers and social influence. Personal factors were facilitators and barriers, self-efficacy, health condition, intention and attitude. For the Intervention change objectives and methods and practical implications to address to these objectives were mentioned. Additionally, conditions required for an intervention were approach of the target population, finance and responsibility. Finally, similarities and differences between the demands of experts and the target group were found. Conclusions: The findings suggest that experts and the target group have a diverse opinion about the demands of a physical activity stimulation intervention. Results of the current study can assist in designing an effective physical activity stimulating intervention for people with a disability or chronic condition.
