Abstract

Academic achievement is a sign of a refined intellect, that can predict future engagement and success. Recent literature suggested that physical fitness is related to academic achievement. It is still unclear how physical fitness and academic achievement relate to each other. The aim of this study was to simultaneously examine the relations between health and skill related physical fitness and academic achievement in typically developing children (8-10 years). It was expected that children with higher scores on physical fitness have better academic skills. One-hundred-sixteen typically developing children (45 boys,71 girls) of four schools from the Netherlands participated in this study. Health related physical fitness was measured by a 20m shuttle run test. Skill related physical fitness was measured by a subtest of the Bruininks-Oseretsky test (coordination of the arms) and a subtest of the Eurofit (10x5m shuttle run test). Academic achievement was measured with a part of the Child Academic Monitoring System a test that measured mathematics, spelling and reading comprehension in children. After a confirmatory factor analysis spelling and reading comprehension were combined to the factor language. A multiple regression analyses was performed to examine the relations between physical fitness and academic achievement adjusted for age and gender. Health and skill related physical fitness were no significant predictors for mathematics and language. This finding does not support the findings of previous literature that physical fitness relates to academic achievement. In future research it is recommended to include children with more variation in age, physical fitness and academic achievement scores.
