Previous studies examining gaze behavior of footballers have utilized simulations or penalty kicks. However, both approaches fail to reproduce the dynamic nature of football. Adopting a naturalistic approach allows for testing in a more representative environment. Such an approach can reveal what cues are used in a given task and how sampling of visual information from a scene is arranged in time. Therefore the aim of this study is to analyze the gaze behavior of footballers using a novel naturalistic setting that replicates the dynamic environment of a football match. Using the mobile eye tracker the gaze behavior of male youth footballers was recorded within a football game. The gaze behavior variable of fixation rates and football specific variables of affordance to pass the ball, passing quality and passing accuracy was analyzed. These variables were also analyzed in phases of a passing cycle i.e. before receiving the ball, while in possession of the ball and after passing the ball. The results of the study showed fluctuations of gaze over time. A statistically significant effect of gaze behavior of before receiving the ball was found in relation to creating affordances to pass. Significant differences in gaze behavior were also found in all three phases of the pass cycle between players. The results revealed new insights on the gaze behavior of footballers. Possible implications for future studies based on these results are also discussed in the article. Keywords: Gaze behavior, Affordances, Naturalistic setting, Fixations rate.
