Introduction: Regular physical activity is beneficial for health and functioning. People with a physical disability or chronic disease, however, participate less in physical activity and sports compared with the general population. To stimulate physically disabled people to participate in physical activities an effective intervention could be essential. For designing this intervention it is important to take the opinion of the target group into consideration. Purpose: To describe the opinion of people with a physical disability or chronic disease concerning the content of an intervention that stimulates physical activity for physically disabled people. Method: Twenty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants varying in age, gender, disability, participation in sports and physical activity. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was used to analyze the results. The Short QUestionnaire to ASsess Health-enhancing physical activity (SQUASH) and Exercise Self- Efficacy Scale (ESES) were included to, respectively, measure level of physical activity and exercise self-efficacy. Results: According to the participants different factors should be considered when stimulating the physically disabled population to improve their participation in physical activity. These factors are inserted in the Integrated model of the Physical Acivity for people with a Disability (PAD) and Intervention Mapping (IM) model. Frequently mentioned factors were facilitators and barriers (e.g. social support, finances, health), low threshold, usercenteredness, after care, marketing and promotion, social influence, and raising awareness of benefits and opportunities of physical activity and sports. Conclusion: A heterogeneous group of participants participated and diverse factors were mentioned to be of importance for stimulating physical activity in the physically disabled population. The results can be used to set up an effective intervention or adapted existing interventions to stimulate physical activity in the physically disabled population. Keywords: physical activity, stimulation, intervention, chronic disease, physical disability, interviews.
