Abstract

To understand motor learning in prosthetic gait, it is of value to study the first phase of motor learning, or the improvement of motor skills through practice. In the present study, the change in energy cost and spatiotemporal gait characteristics during a practice intervention was studied in able-bodied subjects using a prosthetic limb simulator. The participants had no prior experience with the prosthetic limb simulator. 13 participants completed a practice program of 5 days separated by 1 to 4 rest days. At each day, the participants completed 3 blocks of 4 minutes walking on an instrumented treadmill. The results showed that the practice program reduced energy cost and improved spatial but not temporal gait parameters. Inter-individual variability was reduced at the end of the practice program. The motor learning effects seem similar compared to earlier research in amputees. Further, the changes in spatiotemporal gait parameters and energy cost seem to support the assumption that our movements are selected to minimize energy cost. From the current results no conclusions can be made concerning the exact relationship between energy cost, gait parameters and inter-individual variability, and further research is recommended to establish this relationship.
