Introduction: A relatively high amount of goals is scored after a counter attack. A counter attack starts after a transition moment and is a quick approach toward the opponent’s goal. The aim of this study is to analyze intra- and inter-team dynamics during transition moments and relate these dynamics to the outcome of the transition moment. Method: Fourteen young elite male soccer players (mean age = 18.4 years, SD = 0.44) participated in this study. Eight games of five against five (four field players and a goalkeeper) were played. GPS data was collected to calculate tactical team variables. Correlations between teams were calculated to determine team dynamics. Results: The main finding was that the correlations for the longitudinal centroids (t= -2.08, p < 0.05) and the length of the teams (t = -2.57, p = 0.05) were significantly higher during regular periods of play compared to transition moments. Conclusion: This study showed that there is an imbalance in the coupling between the teams in the longitudinal direction around a transition moment. However, this imbalance could not be related to the outcome of the transition moment. Keywords: Soccer, small-sided games, transition moments, team dynamics
