Introduction: There is a high number of re-injuries in anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed (ACLR) patients that return to soccer. It seems that due to fatigue, biomechanical factors of ACLR patients get worse. Therefore, a return to soccer criterion for the aerobic capacity should be set, to get knowledge about the aerobic capacity of ACLR patients. Method: Two ACLR patients (20.18 and 22.09 years old, both playing soccer) that finished rehabilitation, but did not return to full game play yet and six healthy people (control group) with a similar level of play (29.25 ± 3.56 years old) participated in this study. All participants performed two interval shuttle run tests (ISRT), with five weeks of training in between, until exhaustion. The distance ran, heart rate recovery (HRR) during the test, and percentage of maximum heart rate (%HRmax) after the test were compared between the groups, and between the two tests. Results: The two ACLR patients ran a greater distance on the first ISRT compared to the control group. Moreover, both ACLR patients increased their distance run during the second ISRT, five weeks later, whereas the control group did not increase their distance run. No differences in HRR and %HRmax were found. Conclusion: The ACLR patients that participated in this study have a better aerobic capacity compared to the control group. However, due to the low number of participants, the results should be interpreted with caution. Therefore, more research with larger groups of ACLR patients and healthy controls is necessary.
