Abstract

Background: An ACL injury is a common injury in many sports. In team handball the injury often occurs during the landing of a jump shot. Many intervention programs try to reduce the injury rate by giving instructions to land safer. Video feedback seems an effective way to do so but not much is known about the effect in sport specific situations. Objective: The purpose of the present study is to test the effectiveness of video feedback with an overlay method provided by VizMo to reduce the risk of an ACL injury in a population of elite female team handball players. Method: 16 female elite handball players were recruited and randomly assigned to a control group (CG) and a video group (VG). Both groups performed jump shots on a target in a pre-test, two training sessions (TR1 & TR2) and an immediate post-test. VG received video feedback of an expert model with an overlay of their own jump shots in TR1 and TR2. Main outcome measure were ankle, knee and hip angles and the LESS score. Results: The VG showed significant improvement in the maximum ankle flexion. Knee and hip flexion in the VG improved significantly at initial contact, maximum angle and ROM. The VG significantly reduced the LESS score of an average of 8.1 in the pre-test to an average of 4 in the post-test. The CG did not show any significant changes between pre- and post- test. Conclusion: VizMo is an effective way to change the landing technique so that the risk of an ACL injury can be reduced. Subjects showed a softer landing technique after the intervention while performance was maintained. To determine the long-term effects and transfer to real game and training situations, further research is needed.
