Abstract

Soccer is a multidisciplinary sport in which many skills are important in order to reach a high performance level. The current study aimed to gain insight in the effect of both technical and tactical skills on expected future performance level of youth soccer players as indicated by trainers. In total, 73 players (age 15.54±0.56 years) performed tests for technical and tactical skills, i.e., Shuttle Dribble Test (ShuttleDT), Slalom Dribble Test (SlalomDT), Loughborough Soccer Passing Test (LSPT) and the Tactical Skills Inventory for Sports (TACSIS) questionnaire. Trainers estimated the future performance level of their players, ranging from lowest amateur level to international level. LISREL was used to create a model in which expected future performance level was explained by both technical and tactical skills. Results show that mostly technical skills explain expected future performance level of the Portuguese sample, when compared to tactical skills, in a model that fitted the data (γ11=0.90 and γ21=0.01, Chi2 (Degrees of Freedom, p-value)=10.96 (6, 0.09), Standardized Root Mean Square Residual=0.06, Goodness of Fit index=0.95, adjusted Goodness of Fit Index=0.84). Portuguese trainers of lower leveled competitions should be aware that they might overlook some skills of youth soccer players, and thus should take the multidisciplinary aspect of soccer into account when selecting and evaluating players. Key words: Soccer research, technical skills, tactical skills, expected future performance level, structural equation modeling
