Abstract

The current study aims to gain insight in the relationship between gaze behavior and successful finishing in soccer. Gaze behavior and finishing were studied in combination under an in situ pass and kick condition. The first part of this study contained a re-analysis of the data of Van Norel and Pepping (2011). The second part of the current study was about manipulating goal size during a simple soccer situation, where the participant had to execute a pass and a finishing on the goal for ten times on two different goal sizes. The participants wore a Mobile Eye that tracked the exact points of gaze of the eye during the execution of the experiment. Results showed that there was no direct relationship between gaze behavior and successful finishing. Nevertheless the players showed a certain gaze behavior that should contribute to successful gaze behavior. The data suggests that gaze behavior is unique for every person and that everybody displays a certain stereotype gaze behavior. These findings highlight the need for further research on gaze behavior during situations where success can be measured to gain more insight in any possible relationship between gaze behavior and success. Keywords: Gaze behavior, vision, soccer, fixation, success.
