Abstract

Background: Physical inactivity is an issue at every age but is suspected to be most prevalent in older adults living in residential care. This study assessed rest home residents' physical activity behavior and pattern. Methods: We recruited 36 participants (20 female and 16 male subjects, mean age: 82, mean Timed Up & Go: 22.1 seconds, mean Abbreviated Mental Test score: 5.8) in five rest homes. Physical activity was measured with an accelerometer worn around the waist for three days at baseline, four and eight weeks of intervention. Physical activity was separated into active and inactive behavior, which could be further classified as walking, shuffling and standing, and sitting and lying respectively. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to test for changes in physical activity for hour of day and measurement week. Pearson correlations and multiple linear regression were conducted to assess the association between active time and age, mobility, BMI, and cognitive functioning. Results: There was complete data for 11 participants and baseline data for 28 participants. Between 10 am and 6 pm one hour and ten minutes were spent upright, of which only 15 to 20 minutes consisted of walking. Of the almost seven hours of inactive time, two hours and 20 minutes were spent lying down. None of the descriptive characteristics could significantly predict active time. Conclusion: These older adults display very low levels of physical activity and spend most of their day sitting or lying, leaving much room for improvement through interventions.
