Abstract

Coaches have a major impact on soccer, influencing training sessions and matches and thus the competitive style of a team. Up to now analyses of soccer matches based on the Dynamical Systems Theory have focused on factors influencing tactical behavior without considering different tactical approaches. This study examined if tactical pre-game instructions influenced tactical and physical variables in small sided soccer games. Heart rate and positional data of eighteen elite youth soccer players were collected while they played ten small sided games on two measurement days. During each measurement day, five matches were played: two with an offensive instruction, two with a defensive instruction and one in a free play condition. Results show that tactical pre-game instructions influence all tactical variables and average heart rate. The instructional conditions all differed from the free play condition and offensive instructions resulted in different behavior than defensive instructions. Finally, differences were found within offensive and defensive instructions, meaning that the content of an instruction is also of importance. Concluding, instructing different playing styles evokes differences in tactical variables and intensities. Future research should consider different playing styles when studying tactical behavior.
