Mapping the sport preference of young (6-8 year old) children may be important for Physical Activity (PA) adherence during adulthood. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility, test-retest reliability, inter-rater reliability and concurrent validity of a six weeks during Sport Preference Program (SPP) in which young children experienced different sports. Nine sports were offered during six Physical Education (PE) classes of 40 to 45 minutes. One hundred and nine children (mean age 7.41 ±.63 years old, 62 boys and 47 girls) of a primary school participated in the SPP which was executed twice. Before and after the SPP classes, children scored their enjoyment related to the experienced sport on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). In addition, the children made a ranking of the nine experienced sports twice. Feasibility was assessed using a short questionnaire answered by the PE teacher and by investigating classroom behavior of the children during a SPP class compared to a standard PE class. Results showed adequate feasibility with some advices to improve the program. Time to complete VAS scores took too long to be feasible for implementation. Test-retest reliability of the VAS scores was poor with 10 of the 12 correlations being of poor or low strength; ICC’s ranged from -.01 to .52. Reliability of the ranking was good with ICC’s ranging from .56 to .83 for test-retest and from .60 to .91for inter-rater reliability (p < .05). Concurrent validity showed high consistency for the number one ranked sports comparing the children’s’ ranking with a parent-reported ranking (Cramer’s V = .725, p<0.01 ). In conclusion, letting children experience and rank different sports seems a feasible, reliable and valid way to map the sport preference in six to eight year old children.
