Abstract

Differential learning is a new training concept which is rapidly growing in interest of trainers and sports scientists. Training a particular skill by repetition, complemented with feedback from a trainer, is replaced by unique and extreme movement executions without any feedback leading towards the improvement of movement execution by reorganization towards the ideal movement solution due to stochastic resonance by the given perturbations. Scientific evidence for this theory however still is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test whether a differential learning program can be successfully implemented within regular training. A pre-, post-, and retention test design was used together with a four week intervention period that included a weekly training session of 15 minutes in which each participant served forty balls. Within the testing phases, performance was measured by the percentage of services in, and by the mean distance-to-target of these balls. Results revealed no significant differences between groups or performance changes over time. When comparing the results with other research on this topic, it is suggested that the amount of perturbations was too low to facilitate reorganization towards an individual optimal movement solution.
