Abstract

The objective of the present study was to investigate the interrelation between motor skills, motor creativity and response inhibition in typically developing children between 6 and 9 years of age. A total of 60 boys and 65 girls were included in the analysis. Motor skills were measures by means of the Körperkoordinationstest (KTK) and 10 x 5m Shuttle Sprint Test. Motor Creativity was measured by the Torrance Test of Thinking Creatively in Action and Movement (TCAM), and Response Inhibition was measured by means of the Stop-Signal Reaction Time Test. Structural equation modelling (LISREL) was used in order to explore the relations. The final model had a chi-squared of 15.92 (p = 0.72), and a RMSEA of 0.00 that suggest that the model is a close approximate fit to the observed data. In this paper it was shown that older children have better scores on all measured variables (R=0.61; R=0.29 and R=0.26). A better performance on motor skills (endurance, body control, and so on) is related to better motor creativity (Fluency) (R=0.30). We concluded that it is important for children to engage in physical activities in order to expand their repertoire of movements and allow them to come up with creative solutions in demanding environments such as a soccer game.
