Introduction - One third of all bicycle accidents occur between the ages of 12 to 24 years in the Netherlands. An increase in the number of purchased e-bikes is observed among the young. Research showed that e-bike accidents result in more severe injuries compared to conventional bicycles. However, little research has been done among young people. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the types and severity of injuries following bicycle accidents among the young comparing conventional cyclists and e-bikers. Material & methods - This retrospective cohort study included patients aged between 10 and 25 years old and that were treated at the emergency department of the Medical Center Leeuwarden following a conventional bicycle- or an e-bike-related accident. The abbreviated injury scale (AIS) was used to classify the type of injuries following a bicycle-related accident. The injury severity score (ISS) was used to determine the overall trauma severity. Results - A total of 794 patients were included in this study, of which 765 were conventional cyclists, whereas only 29 were e-bikers. Both groups were significantly more often involved in one-sided bicycle accidents and the ISS body region most commonly involved was situated externally. Followed by the extremities or pelvic girdle injuries in conventional cyclists and face injuries in e-bikers. Only 2% of conventional cyclists suffered from serious injuries and none of the e-bikers. A comparable median ISS of 2 was found for both groups. Conclusion - No statistically significant difference was found between the groups regarding the type of injury. Concerning the severity of injuries, most severe injuries only occurred in conventional cyclists. However, results may be biased by the low incidence of e-bikers in the sample.
