Abstract

Background: Nowadays, there is a clear tendency in facelift surgery to use a less invasive socalled short scar facelift technique instead of a more invasive facelift technique; these less invasive facelift techniques are claimed to be less risky and have shorter recovery time with equal results and patient satisfaction. However, studies assessing patients’ satisfaction following these types of short scar facelifts with valid outcome tools are still lacking. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate long-term patients’ satisfaction after two types of short scar facelift techniques: the Purse string Reinforced Superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS)-ectomy (PRS) facelift and the En-bloc facelift using the FACE-Q Aesthetics. Methods: Patients that received the PRS facelift or the En-bloc facelift between January of 2014 and December of 2019 in Bey Bergman Clinics were asked to participate in this study and were sent four FACE-Q Aesthetics scales. Results: A total of 53 out of 175 patients completed the questionnaire and the results of the FACE-Q Aesthetics showed mean ± SD scores of 69.9 ± 20.8 on social function, 54.5 ± 20.2 on satisfaction with facial appearance, 50.6 ± 25.9 on satisfaction with outcome, and 55.6 ± 29.2 on satisfaction with decision to undergo the facelift. No difference was found between the two facelift groups and social function (p=0.70), satisfaction with facial appearance (p=0.82), with outcome (p=0.97) , and with decision (p=0.85). All complications that occurred were minor. Ancillary procedures were frequently performed. Conclusion: The PRS facelift and the En-bloc facelift result in mediocre long-term overall patients’ satisfaction rates with no significant difference between both techniques. Prospective studies on differences in long-term patients’ satisfaction between short scar facelifts and comparison with other facelift techniques (e.g. deep-plane facelift) definitely are warranted.
