Objectives The aim of the study was to collect items from experienced sports physicians relating to the presence and severity of overuse elbow injuries in young athletes for developing a measurement instrument. This instrument will measure clinical signs and functional limitations as well as risk factors of overuse elbow injury. Methods 13 Dutch Sports physicians, Physiotherapists, and Orthopedic surgeons involved in the guidance and treatment of young athletes in elbow-loading sports participated in a focus group. They discussed signals and functional limitations related to overuse elbow injuries caused by sports activity in young athletes. Data were categorized into signals and limitations with subcategories, using an inductive approach. Results Nineteen important signals and three important functional limitations were provided by a focus group of 13 expert sports physicians involved in treating youth athletes in elbow-loading sports. The focus group reached a consensus that the most important signal is pain. Additional important signals included the onset of the complaints, swelling of the joint, and limited range of motion. The most important functional limitation was found to be decreased sports performance, movement and mobility during sports and at rest. Conclusions The result of this study provides the basis for developing a measurement instrument that will allow identifying overuse elbow injury in youth athletes with balanced significance on pain and alternative symptoms.
