Cleaning the teeth is important to maintain oral health. The advice is to brush two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. This advice is not followed by a large part of the population, which means that oral hygiene is not optimal. Instructions for oral hygiene are not effective enough to cause patients to change their behavior and brush their teeth longer. An important reason for people to brush their teeth is to have a fresh breath. This study answers the following question: can the brushing time be influenced by adding the flavor in a toothpaste later and is this age dependent? The aim of the current study is to lengthen the brushing time by conditioning patients and reward them with a fresh flavor, so they will brush for two minutes more easily. The brushing time was determined with a manual toothbrush (n=30) with a neutral toothpaste (Jack ‘n Jill natural toothpaste), a toothpaste with a mint flavor (Prodent Coolmint) and a natural toothpaste, where a mint flavor was added after brushing for 45 seconds. Besides, it was determined whether there is a connection between brushing time with the different toothpastes and the age of the research subjects. Brushing the teeth with a neutral toothpaste and adding the flavor later, gave the longest brushing time (mean = 77,90 s). This brushing time was significantly longer than brushing with only a neutral toothpaste (mean = 60,30 s) or a toothpaste with mint flavor (mean = 71,43 s). There was not a significant difference between the different age groups on the brushing time and there was also no significant interaction effect between age and type of toothpaste. Based on this research it can be concluded that the flavor of a toothpaste is an important factor for the brushing time. The results suggest that the brushing time can be longer by adding a flavor later during the brushing, and is independent of age. However, brushing time is still under two minutes. The results of this study can be used in developing new toothpastes. This is the first study about the effect of delaying the flavor effect in a toothpaste, more research is needed to clarify the effect.
