Background Overweight and periodontitis provide a systemic pressure of inflammation and appear to be involved in the development or progression of other (systemic) diseases. In recent years several studies have suggested a link between overweight, obesity and periodontal disease. Due to the hyper-inflammatory state of the body of overweight people, the susceptibility to chronic infectious diseases such as periodontitis increase. Obesity could, due to the release of adipokines, disrupt the host's response to the antigens in the bacterial plaque, which could increase the local periodontal inflammatory responses. Aim The aim of this study is to demonstrate the possible relationship between being overweight and the severity of periodontitis. Materials and Methods BMI score, visceral fat value and waist circumference were measured in periodontitis patients selected for this study. PISA score was noted. With a regression analysis the possible relationship between the abovementioned variables was investigated. In this model the PISA score was approached as the dependent variable. Results After correcting for age, no correlation was found between being overweight and the severity of the periodontal inflammation. The results showed that there is a high correlation between visceral fat, waist circumference and BMI score. A negative correlation was found between age and PISA score. Conclusion Obesity does not seem to have a significant influence on the severity of the periodontal inflammation. Available literature contradicts these findings. More research is needed to determine whether the presence of overweight influences the prevalence and/or severity of periodontitis.
