Abstract

Introduction The definition of a gingival recession reads: "a mucogingival disorder associated with the movement of the marginal gingiva towards apical to the enamel-cement border with exposure of the root surface to the oral environment". Recessions can be treated in different ways: non-surgical and surgical. It is important that a dentist and an orthodontist, near a periodontist, a specialiast in the field of periodontolgy, have adequate knowledge about the consequences, the approach en the possbile treatment options of recessions based on the high prevalence and the possible implications of recessions. As the literature has shown, in most cases dentist and orthodontists pay not enough attention to recessions. The aim of this survey is intended to show the extent of knowledge about recessions and the choice of treatment in case of recessions by dental students, dentists, orthodontists and periodontists and to demonstrate a possible difference between these groups. The main question is: "What is the difference in the amount of knowledge about and the choice of treatment in case of gingival recessions between dental students, dentists, orthodontists and periodontists?" Materials and methods The extent of knowledge about gingival recessions and the choice of treatment in case of recessions by periodontists, orthodontists, dentists and dental students was investigated through the distribution of an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of four categories, namely socio-demographic data, knowledge about recessions, choice of treatment in case of recessions and the number of referrals sent to a periodontist by dentists, dental students (under supervision) and orthodontists and the number of referrals received by a periodontist. Results A difference in the extent of knowledge about recessions and choice of treatment in case of recessions between periodontists and dentists, orthodontists and dental students was demonstrated. Discussion Respondents may be interested in the field of periodontology, which means that the results may not be representing the reality. In addition, a bias could have been obtained because respondents were forced to answer the questions in the quastionnaire. Conclusion This study has provided insight into the knowledge about recessions and the choice of treatment in case of recessions by periodontists, orthodontists, dentists and dental students. On the basis of the results of this study an advice can be given to the study of dentistry and orthodontics and to practicing orthodontists and dentists.
