Abstract

Many dentists aren’t able to properly assess their own visual acuity. Furthermore, there seems to be a trend in the purchase of loupe glasses by dentists under 40 years of age. Training of visual acuity may occur during the study of dentistry, but could also continue to develop after completion of the study. It is possible that this training condition is discontinued due to the early use of loupe glasses or even be weakened by the use of them. This could lead to dependence of these aids. The aim of this study was twofold. Firstly, gaining insight into the possibility to train eyeaccommodation ability, specifically for dental students. Secondly, an attempt was made to provide insight into the side-effects of the use of loupe glasses in young dentists. The corresponding research question was: to what extent does the dentistry study change the visual perception of details and how does the use of loupe glasses by dentists younger than 40 years influence the visual perception of details with the naked eye? Using a miniature eye test fixed on a negatoscope, the development of dental students was investigated. Each study year was measured at two moments. The results show that there is a significant increase in visual acuity in four of the six groups (Bachelor 1 and 2 and Master 1 and 2). For Bachelor 3 and Master 3 no significant increase was found between the first and second measurements. No significant build-up of visual acuity between the different years has been observed. However, the degree of difference depends on the academic year in which the student is present. In the second part of the study, dentists who did or did not use loupe glasses were assessed with the same miniature eye test. No significant difference was found for the influence of loupe use on visual acuity. However, a shift from the normal distribution to reading lines can be seen. Here, the mode of the non-magnifying glasses is one reading line further than the loupe users. It can be concluded that dentistry students show improvement of visual perception of details within four months. However, visual perception does not develop in a way that more is observed within the last academic year than in the first academic year. No conclusive answer can be given about the influence of loupe glasses on the visual perception of details in dentists who are younger than 40 years of age. There are indications for a difference between loupe users and non-loupe users, but must be substantiated with follow-up research.
