Implants are nowadays widely used in dentistry. In recent years there have been many studies on the survival rate of implants. However, most of these studies are limited to a follow-up of 5 to 10 years. In addition, these studies are not limited to the edentulous mandible, many also examine the edentulous maxilla and partial edentate areas in both the mandible and maxilla. In literature there is still a lot of contradiction and ambiguity about the influence of different factors on the survival rate of implants. 3 Therefore, in this study the survival rate and success rate of ITI implants in the edentulous mandible were examined over a longer follow-up period than 10 years. In addition, research has been carried out into the influence of various factors (age, sex, smoking, medication, etc.), the influence of the degree of oral hygiene and the satisfaction of the patients. Between August 1989 and September 2000, a total of 237 patients (498 implants) were implanted. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria and telephonically contacting the patients for the purpose of making an appointment, 60 patients remained (36 women, 24 men). The implants were lost in 7 of these patients, but this data was included in the analyzes. Patients were scored during intraoral testing at probing depth, mBl and mPLi. In addition, an OPG was made and for the purpose of scoring the satisfaction a questionnaire was filled in (OHIP-EDENT). Through the Kaplan Meijer survival analysis, a CSR of 85.7% was obtained after a maximum follow-up of 27 years. The average follow-up of this study was 19.3 years (± 5.63 SD). The success rate was 76.9% after 19 years. No significant influence was measured on age, gender, smoking, medication use and diameter of the implant. Only the length of the implant was found to be significantly less. The survival rate of the 12mm implants was 62.2% after 27 years. The degree of oral hygiene also had no significant effect on the probing depth. The OHIP-EDENT was scored between the scores 1 (= very satisfied) and 2 (= satisfied) on almost all the components. From this research it can be concluded that implants are a good treatment strategy, also for the longer term. The survival rate after 27 years is still high (85.7%), this is in accordance with previous studies. In addition, the patients are still very satisfied after 27 years. There seem to be few factors that influence the survival rate, but these factors need to be further investigated.
