Abstract

Introduction: To increase interprofessional collaboration between oral health care and dentistry students, an intervention has been developed in which interprofessional education is offered. The following question is answered: To what extent does interprofessional education change the trust in the dental hygienist, the knowledge of the dental hygienist's field, the perceived division of tasks between dentistry students and oral health students and the willingness to follow more IPE (RIPLS) according to dental students? Materials and methods: The research is a pre- and post-questionnaire design with randomized group classification. During one year, oral health care students (n = 38) and dentistry students (n = 61) participated in the clinical program for pediatric dentistry, where dentistry students and oral health care students worked together in couples. By means of a questionnaire, trust, knowledge and the division of tasks was measured. Also the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) score of dentistry students was measured. Results: The pre- and post-test have been completed by thirty students. The results show that the dentistry students have seen more task rearrangement after the intervention and that their knowledge of the dental hygienist's field has improved. The RIPLS score did not change. The trust in the dental hygienist stayed high. Conclusion: By means of the interprofessional education intervention, we succeeded in increasing the division of tasks between dentist and dental hygienist as observed by dentistry students and improving the knowledge level of dentistry students in the field of dental hygienists.
