Abstract

Objective To date, no research has been conducted on the difference in efficacy of the reduction of gingivitis between a wooden toothpick and a rubber toothpick. The aim of this study was to compare the difference in the reduction of interdental dental plaque and interdental bleeding as indicator for gingivitis, and patient experience relating to the use of these toothpicks. Materials and methods Thirty-four patients participated in a single-blind, randomized controlled, split-mouth design, clinical study. Patients were asked to use both types of toothpicks for interdental cleaning once daily, for a period of two weeks. Outcome variables, dental plaque and bleeding, were assessed by the Plaque Index of Silness and Löe and the Eastman Interdental Bleeding Index respectively. The patients experience was assessed by a questionnaire. Paired Student’s t-test, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and Wilcoxon signed ranks test were used for statistical analyses. Results Both products showed a significant reduction of dental plaque and bleeding. No statistically significant differences with regard to these outcome variables could be found for the different type of toothpicks. The rubber toothpick was rated significantly superior in comparison to the wooden toothpick regarding the ease of use and the overall satisfaction. Regarding the perception of pain and the probability of future use no difference was found in the rating. Conclusion This study shows that both types of toothpicks were similarly effective in the reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis. Patients considered the rubber toothpick easier to use and were more satisfied with. However, these factors were not decisive for the selection of the preferred types of toothpicks. Recommendation The selection of the types of toothpicks could best be based on the preference of each patients. Concerning the patient compliance, the rubber toothpick may be preferable since it’s easier to use in comparison to the wooden toothpick.
