Child abuse is common in the Netherlands. It is estimated that 34 of the 1000 children are being abused1. There are several types of child abuse. The different forms can be subdivided into sexual abuse, emotional abuse and physical abuse. A form of physical abuse that dentist sees in their dental practices is dental neglect. To find out if there is a form of dental neglect, the expertise of a dentist or dental hygienist is necessary. Not much research has been done about dental neglect. What is understood by this term can therefore differ by individual oral care provider. The lack of a definition may cause the diagnosis of dental neglect will not be determined in one way. As a result, not all children with neglected teeth will receive the necessary support. The research question is: 'According to Dutch dentists-general practitioners, what should be included by the Dutch definition of dental neglect?’ A cross-sectional, transversal research has been conducted by using digital questionnaires. The questionnaires presented various situations where the respondent had to indicate whether he or she would be more alert to dental neglect in such a situation. A definition was drawn up based on these clinical situations. The respondents were asked when they judged an example definition of dental neglect as correct. Using statistical analyzes, it was also investigated whether respondents with specific background information more often opted for certain answer options. Background information used for this is the age, place of residence, the year of graduation, place of graduation and the gender of the respondent. In addition, based on information, it was statistically analyzed whether the group of respondents correctly reflected the sample. The results of the study show that the respondents agree in what situations dental neglect should be considered or not. An example definition in which all components of dental neglect are combined is confirmed by the respondents. In a statistical analysis of the research results, there was no correlation between the respondent's background information and their answers in the questionnaire. Also there was not an significant difference between the background information of the respondents and that of the sample. In conclusion, dentists in the Netherlands will diagnose dental neglect by this definition: "Dental neglect is, despite the receiving of dental advice, the failure of parent or guardian in facilitate the necessary care or treatments which are essential for ensuring a level of oral health in which there is a healthy mouth with an adequate function and in absence of pain or infection.”
