According to earlier studies, oral health isn’t a priority for athletes. Many, in those cases Olympic, athletes don’t have a good clinical and subjective oral health. The results are for example caries lesions, periodontal problems and erosion. The aim of this study was to examine if there are differences in oral health behavior and subjective oral health between elite college-rowers and recreational college-rowers. The question in this study was: are there differences regarding oral health behavior and subjective oral health between elite college-rowers and recreational college-rowers and does the number of weekly training sessions matter? A questionnaire has been spread over participating college rowing clubs in the Netherlands. A total of 268 college-rowers have been asked to fill in the questionnaire and have been asked questions about the number of weekly training sessions, oral health behavior, oral health situation, complaints or problems of the dentition or Recreational college-rowers have been found to brush their teeth more regularly than elite college-rowers who train more than 7 times a week. A majority of the subjects barely used interdental cleaning tools, mouthwash or a tongue cleaner. No differences were found regarding the mean rating of the position of the teeth and the subjective oral health of the different research groups. The ratings of both the position of the teeth and the subjective oral health was good, little to no problems regarding the dentition were reported. About half of the subject have reported complaints regarding the temporomandibular joint, there were no differences between the research groups. Nearly all subjects have registered themselves at a dental practice and yearly see a dentist or other member of the dental practice team. Less than half of the subjects have insured themselves for dental care, while there’s also a share of the subjects who don’t even know how they’re insured. No differences were found between the research groups. Subjects of all the research groups didn’t meet the demands the Ivoren Kruis24 made according to the eating frequency during the day. Both groups of elite college-rowers eat more often during the day than recreational college-rowers. Differences have been found regarding oral health behavior between the different groups of elite college-rowers and recreational college-rowers. These differences concern the frequencies that the subject brush their teeth and the frequencies of eating during the day. No differences have been found regarding the subjective oral health between the different research groups.
