Aim: In the Center for Dentistry and Oral hygiene (Centrum voor Tandheelkunde en Mondzorgkunde (CTM)) of the University Hospital Groningen, non-surgical periodontal treatment is carried out by students. The following research aims to quantify the results of this therapy. On the one hand the results can be used to compare similar research carried out in educational oral health institutions and dental offices. On the other hand the results are useful as a tool for monitoring, evaluating and improving non-surgical periodontal therapy in the CTM. The main research question is: “What is the clinical efficacy of periodontal therapy carried out by students in the CTM in Groningen? Methods: The periodontal status of patients who received initial periodontal treatment in the period between May 2014 and May 2016 were included (N = 34). The amount of pockets deeper and equal to 5 mm had to be higher than 30%. For every patient the amount of pockets, bleeding score, plaque score and PISA score were defined before and after initial periodontal therapy. Pockets were divided into four subgroups based on their depth, namely: group 1: <5 mm, group 2: 5 mm, group 3: 6 mm and group 4: ≥7 mm. Results: A significant increase of 41,6% in the amount of pockets in group 1 has been observed (p = <0,001) and a significant reduction in the amount of pockets in groups 2, 3 and 4 of respectively 27,3%, 63,8% and 60,5% (with respectively p = 0,028, p = <0,001 and p = <0,001). Also, the plaque score decreased with 41,6% (p = <0,001), the bleeding score with 45,1% (p = <0,001) and the PISA with 55,4% (p = <0,001) after initial periodontal treatment. Conclusion: This analysis demonstrates that initial periodontal therapy carried out by students results in a significant reduction of pocket depth, bleeding score, plaque score and PISA score. Further research must point out how big this effect is in comparison to other dental offices and educational oral health institutions and if there is room for improvement at the CTM.
