Abstract

Introduction. In several publications it is being concluded that a combined orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment has a significant influence on the quality of life by patients with a malocclusion. However, dedicated publications are few, so additional research via the means of a standardised questionnaire, is called for to provide further foundation for the above conclusion. In this cross-sectional pilot study, using the Dutch translation of the original English OQLQ-questionnaire, data has been gathered as a basis for verifying whether medical treatment indeed can make a difference in the quality of life of a patient. Next to this, it has been tested whether the OQLQ- questionnaire is a practical means in the Dutch context. As such further insight can be acquired on the effectivity of a potential future longitudinal study. Research material and method. The OQLQ questionnaire has been filled out by 64 patients of the UMCG, over a period of 5 weeks. Before sending out the OQLQ questionnaire, a letter was sent to the patients in which the study was announced and explained and in which consent was asked of the patient for sending the questionnaire. All patients were called on the telephone to further explain and request co-operation. This questionnaire is split up in four sections or ‘question domains’, covering function, aesthetics, the awareness of dentophacial disfigurement and the social factor. The difference in quality of life is measured over two groups almost identical in seize; one group of patients still awaiting chirurgical correction and one group of patients which have been operated. Next to this, respondents were categorised in gender and age group and the effect of the telephone conversation prior to sending the questionnaire, was analysed. Outcome. The research population consisted of 62.5% female patients and of 51.6% patients with an age of 18 to 25 years. A significant difference was demonstrated in the number of respondents between the group of patients with whom successful telephonic contact had been established and the group without telephonic contact. A significant difference in quality of life was found between the two groups of patients (one group awaiting operation and one group after the operation). The operated group showed a significant higher quality of life, both for the overall score of the test as well as for each of the question domains. Comparing the two groups, the difference was highest in the question domain of aesthetics, 66.48% point higher score. Conclusion. Based on the statistical significant outcome of this cross-sectional study, it can be concluded that following a combined orthodontic/surgical - jaworthopaedic treatment, an improved quality of life can be measured . The research results also indicate that follow-up research via a longitudinal study at the UMCG could be useful.
